numbness, tingling, burning pain, or weakness is making daily tasks harder, your neurologist may recommend an EMG and nerve conduction study. These tests give your care team useful information about how nerves and muscles are working and can help identify the source of symptoms.

What is an EMG and nerve conduction study?
Although people often say “EMG” to describe the full appointment, two related tests may be involved. A nerve conduction study measures how quickly and strongly electrical signals travel through a nerve. An electromyography, or EMG, evaluates the electrical activity of selected muscles.
Together, the results can help a neurologist look for patterns that may be associated with carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar neuropathy, peripheral neuropathy, pinched nerves in the neck or back, radiculopathy, or certain muscle disorders. Results are interpreted alongside your history, exam, and other testing when appropriate.
Why might a Phoenix neurologist recommend EMG testing?
Your provider may suggest testing when symptoms include numbness or tingling in the hands, feet, arms, or legs; burning, electric, or shooting nerve pain; weak grip, foot drop, or trouble lifting an arm; symptoms that wake you at night; balance changes; or neck or low-back pain that travels into an arm or leg.
In Arizona, people sometimes assume hand tingling is simply from work, exercise, or sleeping position. Those factors can matter, but symptoms that persist, spread, or affect strength deserve a medical evaluation.
What happens during the appointment?
For the nerve conduction portion, small electrodes are placed on the skin. Brief electrical pulses stimulate a nerve, and the equipment records the response. The sensation can be surprising but is typically short-lived.
During the EMG portion, a fine needle electrode may be used in selected muscles to record activity at rest and with gentle movement. Your clinician explains each step and adjusts the exam to the symptoms being evaluated. The complete visit often takes about 30 to 60 minutes, although timing varies.
How should I prepare?
Arrive with clean, dry skin and avoid lotion, oils, or creams on the areas being tested. Wear loose clothing that allows access to your arms or legs. Tell your care team about blood thinners, implanted devices, bleeding disorders, or any concerns before the study. Keep taking medications unless your clinician gives you different instructions.
What do results mean?
EMG and nerve conduction studies are valuable tools, but they are one part of your evaluation. A normal study can still be helpful, and an abnormal result needs to be interpreted in context. When should symptoms be treated as urgent?
Call 911 or seek emergency care for sudden weakness on one side of the body, facial drooping, speech difficulty, severe sudden headache, new confusion, or sudden vision loss. These symptoms may be signs of a stroke or another emergency and should not wait for an EMG appointment.

Does an EMG hurt?
The test can be uncomfortable, especially during brief stimulation or needle testing, but most people tolerate it well. Let the clinician know if you are worried or having pain.
Will I get results the same day?
Often, the clinician can discuss preliminary findings after the test. The timing of a final interpretation depends on your care plan.
Can EMG diagnose every cause of numbness?
No single test answers every question. EMG and nerve conduction studies are used with your symptoms, physical examination, and other tests when needed.
